Jets Smith FootballIt will be at least five days before Geno Smith starts talking about his future contract with the New York Jets.

That’s because the former West Virginia quarterback has fired his agents at Select Sports, according to Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal, and must wait five days before hiring a new one. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Smith fired his agent because he “thought he would be and should be the No. 1 overall pick.”

Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio that was not the case and that the departure from Select Sports was “not because of the whole draft experience.” There’s also the possibility that Smith fired his agent because he got drafted by the Jets in particular, but that’s just conjecture.

Smith was the second quarterback drafted over the weekend after former Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel was selected by the Bills No. 16 overall. Smith was expected to go before Manuel.

The top of the draft was not quarterback heavy. Only three were selected in the first three rounds, while four went in the fourth round alone. There were seven quarterbacks chosen in the first three rounds in both 2011 and 2012.
