Antoine WinfieldThe Patriots already locked up Aqib Talib, Kyle Arrington and Adrian Wilson this offseason, but it appears they had interest in adding another piece to their retooled secondary.

New England made “multiple calls” inquiring about Antoine Winfield before the Seahawks stole him away, according to Ian Rapoport or NFL.com. The three-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year, $3 million contract with $1 million guaranteed, according to Rapoport.

The other teams interested in Winfield were the Broncos, Vikings and Redskins. Winfield will join All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman and Pro Bowlers Brandon Browner, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas in Seattle to form perhaps the best secondary in football.

At 36 years old, Winfield is one of the oldest players in the league, but he was still playing at a high level in 2012. He’ll likely play as a nickel corner with the Seahawks, manning the slot.
