Ryan Sweeney was released by the Red Sox on Saturday, but it didn’t take long for him to find a new home.
The former Boston outfielder signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, according to MassLive.com’s Evan Drellich, and he expects to report to the team’s Triple-A affiliate Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was shipped to the Red Sox along with Andrew Bailey as part of the Josh Reddick trade with the Oakland A’s, but failed to catch on at the major league level. He hit just .260 in 63Â games for the Sox last year, with no home runs and 16 runs batted in.
Sweeney was granted his release by the Red Sox at the end of spring training, after he re-signed with the team during the offseason. He cited a better opportunity with the Cubs as a reason for his decision.
