Wes Welker will have the luxury of going from Tom Brady to Peyton Manning, but before he starts snagging passes from the Broncos’ slinger, he’ll be dealing with plenty of media inquiries about his “breakup” with the Patriots.
As a guest on ESPN’s Mike & Mike on Wednesday morning, Welker was asked about the negotiations with the Pats and if they were ever personal.
“No, I don’t think so. I think a lot of it is just business. It’s kind of the unfortunate part of the business, but it is what it is,” he said. “You try and find what works for you, you know, as far as financially as a player and everything else. I think at the end of the day, fortunately or unfortunately, it kind of just worked out the way it did.”
Fans might expect Welker to come hot out of the gate to prove to the Pats and the rest of the NFL that he’s still got it. The wide receiver explains that he won’t be playing with a chip on his shoulder only because of the change of scenery but because he always tries to play with a chip on his shoulder.
“I’ve been [playing with a chip on my shoulder] my whole career, I don’t see that really changing.”
Welker also said that he and Manning have had dinner together recently to talk about the upcoming season. Brady and his new target, Danny Amendola, on the other hand, have been working out together at USC.
