The NHL regular season may be over, but that doesn’t mean the hockey has stopped for players on the 22 teams who aren’t lucky enough to still be playing for the Stanley Cup. The world championships are going on right now, and there is plenty of NHL representation.
At least one team must be hating that fact right now.
That team would be the Carolina Hurricanes, who saw their captain Eric Staal suffer a nasty-looking knee injury Thursday while Staal was representing Canada. Staal was the recipient of a brutal knee-to-knee hit from Canucks defenseman Alex Edler, who is playing in the tournament representing Sweden.
According to CBS Sports’ Eye on Hockey blog, Edler was given a five-minute major for kneeing in addition to a game misconduct. The hit left Staal on the ice writhing in pain before he was eventually helped off the ice.
