There was just one NHL playoff game tonight, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are making a solid case to be in the Stanley Cup Final.

They took a big step toward their goal on Saturday night when they defeated the New York Islanders in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Brooks Orpik scored less than 10 minutes into overtime to lift the Pens to a 4-3 win over the Islanders, and send them on to the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Ottawa Senators.

Quick hitter

The Islanders drew first blood against the Penguins on Saturday night, and John Tavares was the guy who got his team on the board.

Less than two minutes into the first period, the Islanders did work passing around their offensive zone. Josh Bailey received a pass on the wing and dished it to Tavares who flipped a quick wrist shot over the shoulder of Tomas Vokoun.

Late-game comeback

The Islanders were up 3-2 with less than 10 minutes to go in the third period. They thought they had the game all but wrapped up, but a quick, heads-up play by the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin sent the game into overtime.

Defense was solid for the Islanders’ part — they had four back against Malkin. But even those four were no match for Malkin’s stick skills behind the net, and the pass off to Paul Martin. Martin took a one-time slap shot from nearly 20 yards out and tied the game up with 5:16 left in the third period.
