Gary Carter could find the sunshine in anything, so it only makes sense that he’s bringing smiles — and possibly baseball — back to Montreal.
The city paid homage to Carter on Tuesday, renaming Faillon Street West for the former catcher, who died last year from brain cancer. The new Rue Gary-Carter is a short distance from Uniprix Stadium, which used to be Jarry Park Stadium and home of the Expos.
The renaming of the street also had some Montrealers thinking about having baseball in the city again. A Gary Carter baseball park is opening June 15, with Little League teams to play for the special occasion, according to the Montreal Gazette. Others were saying that Carter’s death made some people wonder if and when pro ball could come back to Montreal.
That may seemed far-fetched for those who remember the Expos’ demise north of the border, but Carter was the source of never-ending optimism.
