Joel Hanrahan had injury added to insult on Monday night, exiting the Red Sox’ game against the Twins with right forearm tightness after giving up a game-tying home run in the ninth inning.
With the Red Sox leading 5-4, Hanrahan surrendered a home run to left field off the bat of Brian Dozier. Two batters later, he missed badly on a pitch to Josh Willingham and drew the attention of John Farrell and the Red Sox training staff.
The potential injury comes at a vulnerable time for the Boston bullpen, as closer Andrew Bailey was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day, as well. Koji Uehara would likely serve as the closer for the Red Sox should they need him, as could Clayton Mortensen or Junichi Tazawa. Craig Breslow was also activated for the team when Bailey was placed on the DL on Monday.
Hanrahan, the owner of an unsightly 9.82 ERA on the season, has already been on the disabled list this season with a hamstring injury.
