Maple Leafs ‘Can’t Bear to Look’ in Rough Loss to Bruins As Toronto Tabloid Taunts Team (Photos)

Oh, Toronto. The Maple Leafs hadn’t made the playoffs since 2004 until they notched a spot this year, but don’t think that the goodwill from going to the postseason will make anyone go easy on the team.

The Toronto Sun had two fine covers prepared for the hometown team Thursday morning after the Leafs got shellacked in Game 1 of their opening-round playoff series against the Bruins. Toronto scored an early goal then got manhandled the rest of the way as Boston put up four goals and outshot the visitors 40-20 at TD Garden. The evening also ended with an ill-timed fight as some Leafs players went after the Bruins despite the final horn sounding.

The Sun captured the sentiment two times over, including a nice bear pun on the back cover.

Really, though, the Sun was tame about all this. After the running gag that local restaurants have been playing on the Leafs for several years now — promising free beer for all Maple Leafs playoff games, knowing full well that wasn’t going to happen — a downcast cover or two shouldn’t make Toronto feel too bad. The Leafs also have at least three games left to try to change the narrative.
