Maybe that coffee was for Phil Hughes after all.

Derek Jeter found himself in the headlines for the most innocuous of reasons Thursday after the Yankees captain, who is on the disabled list while recovering from a broken ankle, was seen leaving a Starbucks with a cup labeled “Philip.” Conjecture quickly began, with some wondering whether Jeter had stolen someone’s drink and others thinking that perhaps he was grabbing a coffee for Hughes, his Yankees teammate.

Hughes got in on the joke the next day, getting himself an iced coffee from Starbucks and ordering under the name “Sanderson” — Jeter’s middle name. He tweeted a photo of his coffee with the word “Payback!” — which could, possibly, be a positive term if he was indeed paying back Jeter’s favor.

Who knows. But add getting coffee to the list of things Jeter can’t do without drawing attention.
