Hagelin CallahanThe Rangers may have been a little more banged up than was originally known during their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Bruins.

The team announced Friday — six days after being eliminated by Boston in five games — that forwards Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin both underwent successful shoulder surgery to repair torn labrums.

Callahan and Hagelin were hampered by shoulder issues during the regular season (Hagelin’s forced him to leave the Swedish team he was playing for during the lockout) but neither missed time during the playoffs. Both logged significant minutes, in fact, with Callahan’s 23:22 of ice time per game leading all forwards in the postseason.

The two failed to create much on the offensive end, though, combining for just four points in five games against the Bruins.

Labrum surgery normally requires between four and five months of recovery time, Rangers beat writer Jim Cerny points out, meaning the Rangers may be without the services of two of their top wingers when the 2013-14 season opens in October.
