FOXBORO, Mass. — The minute T.J. Moe stepped on the field at Gillette Stadium to speak with the media, he was met with a question about Wes Welker.
The comparisons between the two players are obvious. Both went undrafted, both use short-area quickness and agility more than straight-line speed to get separation, both are under 6-foot (despite Moe’s generous listing) and both excel in the slot, rather than outside. Moe was quick to dismiss the comparisons, though, despite the media’s insistence to address them.
“That’s an honor to get compared to a great player,” Moe said. “I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about trying to make the Patriots roster and doing everything they’ve asked me to do. From start to finish here, we’ll be listening to coach (Bill) Belichick, coach (Josh) McDaniels, coach (Chad) O’Shea, all of them guys. I’ll leave the comparisons left up to you guys.”
Moe was among the more comfortable players who met with the media for the first time on Friday afternoon. He cracked some jokes about being a Rams fan having to watch the Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVI, and he cracked that his experience as a high school quarterback doesn’t allow him to read the minds of his QBs or fellow wide receivers.
