Tony Romo is known not just as perhaps the best golfer in the NFL, but maybe all other professional American sports.
Beyond playing a decent schedule of tournaments over the NFL offseason, Romo regularly participates in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and has tried to qualify for the U.S. Open several times, as well. Romo hasn’t qualified for a PGA Tour event before, but it probably wouldn’t surprise many if he made a field someday.
Well, that someday may come later rather than sooner, as it appears Romo is putting golf on the backburner.
After signing a six-year, $108 million contract this offseason, suffice it to say that the 33-year-old quarterback has a little more pressure to perform this season. Additional pressure is certainly coming down from his owner, as Jerry Jones recently said he expects Romo to spend “Peyton Manning-type time on the job.”
Something’s got to give, and for Romo that appears to be golf. According to an ESPN report, Romo has passed on the Azalea Invitational, a highly regarded amateur tournament, and will not try to qualify for the HP Byron Nelson Championship or this year’s U.S. Open, which will be held in June at Merion Golf Club
