Chipper Jones may have had a year of baseball left in him when he retired, but that doesn’t mean Jones would have been able to handle the game’s best as he always had — especially if those best were blowing pitches past him with arms more than a dozen years his junior.
Jones acknowledged that much Wednesday after watching the Mets’ Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler take care of both ends of a doubleheader. Wheeler made his major league debut Tuesday and went six innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven. Harvey, who has been turning heads all season, went seven innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs but striking out 13 batters. The team the Mets mowed down? The Atlanta Braves.
