Colin Kaepernick Hits 87 MPH on Radar Gun While Throwing Out First Pitch at Giants Game (Video)

Colin Kaepernick proved that he still has a live arm on the pitcher’s mound Friday night.

The 49ers quarterback threw out the first pitch at AT&T Park in San Francisco and clocked 87 mph on the radar gun. Kaepernick was good enough in high school to receive partial scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Tennessee and Arizona State as a pitcher, according to The New York Times.

The former University of Nevada star was drafted in 2009 by the Chicago Cubs in the 43rd round, despite not playing the sport since high school. He piled up some impressive stats in high school, including a 1.27 ERA his senior year while going 9-2 with 97 strikeouts in 83 innings, according to Max Preps. Kaepernick threw nine complete games, including two no-hitters.

Kaepernick’s pitch, which likely would have hit a left-handed batter if there was a live hitter in the box, far surpassed the speed of Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson‘s fastball two weeks ago. Wilson’s first pitch was clocked at 75 mph.

It’s unclear how NFL coaches feel about their star quarterbacks trying to top each other on the pitcher’s mound, but exerting so much effort while throwing a baseball could lead to an unexpected injury. Throwing a football is thought to be a much more natural motion than throwing a baseball.
