Dustin Pedroia Gets Rare Day of Rest as Jose Iglesias Tries Hand at Second Base

Jose IglesiasFor the first time in 2013, Dustin Pedroia will not be in the Red Sox lineup Sunday. But don’t worry, unlike teammates Mike Napoli and Clay Buchholz, there’s no malady keeping Pedroia off the field, it’s just a (very rare) scheduled day off.

In his place, Jose Iglesias will get the crack at second base, looking to work on that utility infielder status. Since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in late May, Iglesias has seen most of his starts at third base, at first filling in for an injured Will Middlebrooks and since claiming at-bats himself.

And with Napoli back in Boston and still dealing with a mystery illness, Mike Carp gets the start at first base. Although Carp came out of nowhere to not only make the Red Sox out of spring training, but carve out some at-bats with his hot bat, he hasn’t yet cooled down. Over his last five games, the 26-year-old has six hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs.
