Jaromir Jagr has scored, if you count the playoffs as well, 759 goals in his NHL career. Of all of those scores, one against the Chicago Blackhawks is among the very best.
Jagr is back in the Stanley Cup Final 21 years after he and the Penguins swept the Blackhawks in 1992. This time, however, Jagr will look to hoist the Cup with the Bruins. Despite the two-decade layoff from the Cup Final, Jagr fondly recalls that series against Chicago.
The then-19-year-old helped change the momentum of the series early in Game 1. With the Pens trailing 4-1, Jagr scored an absolutely incredible goal featuring gorgeous stickhandling before beating Ed Belfour. That helped start the comeback in a game that the Pens would eventually win before going on to sweep the series.
It’s a goal Jagr says was one of the best of his career, and he still remembers it vividly.
“We were down 4-1, and I didn’t think we had a chance, because they were forechecking really well,” Jagr said Tuesday at Stanley Cup Final media day, according to the Daily Herald. “With five minutes left, we were down one, and I got lucky and score a pretty good-looking goal, and Mario [Lemieux] won it with 15 seconds left. Even though it was the first game, I thought it was a pretty key game.”
