“Special assistant” jobs are often figurehead positions in major league front offices, but the role that Jason Varitek has taken on with the Red Sox is anything but.
The longtime Boston catcher and captain has played a large part in not only working with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross, but also in identifying young talent. The Red Sox will utilize Varitek’s scouting expertise Thursday night, when they are scheduled to make the No. 7 overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft.
