The Red Sox appeared headed for extra innings yet again Tuesday, when Kelly Johnson‘s ninth-inning home run off closer Andrew Bailey tied Game 2 of the team’s doubleheader with Tampa Bay at one run apiece. The score didn’t remain tied for long, though, as Jonny Gomes launched a homer of his own in the bottom of the inning to allow the Sox to walk off victorious after a very long day of baseball.
After the game, Gomes spoke about the need for teammates to pick each other up when one struggles.
“There’s two people in this league who aren’t going to struggle this year,” he said. “One’s going to be the MVP and the other’s going to be the Cy Young. Everyone else is going through peaks and valleys. So, if you’ve got 24 other guys picking [up] the guy that’s down, you’ll be successful.”
