Maria Sharapova Fires Back at Serena Williams at Wimbledon, Says She Should ‘Talk About Other Things’

williams-sharapovaWimbledon doesn’t begin until Monday, but that isn’t stopping two of women’s tennis’ biggest stars from engaging in a war of words.

Serena Williams made headlines last week, when, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she not only got heat for her questionable comments on the Steubenville rape case, but also appeared to take some unprovoked shots at rival tennis opponent Maria Sharapova.

“There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest,” Williams was quoted as saying. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ — it’s so boring. She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”

Williams was presumably referring to tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, who is rumored to be an ex of Williams’ and is now dating Sharapova.

Sharapova heard Williams’ comments and responded Saturday morning during her pre-Wimbledon press conference.

“Obviously, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she’s achieved on the court,” Sharapova said. “You can never take anything away from that.

“If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that’s what it should be about.”

Williams and Sharapova could potentially meet in the Wimbledon championship, and, well, let’s just say that could get interesting.
