With wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley all recovering from injuries, Mark Sanchez doesn’t know much about the receivers he’s been throwing to at Jets OTAs. He might start by learning their names.
Sanchez has been throwing passes to five entirely new receivers during organized team activities over the past few weeks, and he doesn’t even know their names, according to the New York Post.
“We’ve come up with some funny nicknames for some of them because you don’t even know their names and they’re just in there,” Sanchez said.
The receivers he’s talking about includes former Seattle Seahawks receiver Ben Obomanu as well as four other players who have a combined two games of NFL experience between them. Joe Collins (Weber State), Zach Rogers (Tennessee) and Thomas Mayo (California, Penn.) are all rookies while Jordan White is in his second year, catching one pass for 13 yards in 2012.
Don’t expect things to get any better for Sanchez or the Jets this season unless they have at least a somewhat healthy receiving corps. If the Jets can’t get Sanchez, or Geno Smith for that matter, anything more than a group of green receivers on the outside, then their passing game will be even worse than the 30th-ranked unit they boasted in 2012.
But, if he’s going to be saddled with them for a while, Sanchez should at least try to learn their names. It’s the least he can do, really.
