Matt Light Says He Never Believed in Anything Aaron Hernandez Stood For

Matt Light was one of the most well-respected players ever to don a Patriots uniform, and he was never sold on Aaron Hernandez.

Light spent two years as Hernandez’s teammate in New England. While he likely never could have expected his former teammate would be charged with murder, Light said he never truly believed in Hernandez in an interview with the Daytona Daily News.

“I never talk about other guys,” Light said, “but I will say I have never embraced — never believed in — anything Aaron Hernandez stood for.”

Hernandez, 23, had his fair share of problems in college at Florida, including multiple failed drug tests. He was also said to have many gang ties from his time in Bristol, Conn., which may have been further cause for his fall from first-round talent to fourth-round draft pick in 2010.

Light questioned some of Hernandez’s behavior, even insinuating that his teammate had “his own agenda — and it wasn’t a good one,” according to the report.

The Patriots seemed to agree with Light’s ideology on Wednesday, as they decided to cut ties with the Pro Bowl tight end shortly after his arrest in connection with the murder of Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez was charged with the murder and five gun-related charges during an arraignment in Attleboro District Court on Wednesday. He is being held without bail.
