Everything has been going right for Mike Carp recently. Things changed on Sunday.
Carp exited Sunday’s game against the Orioles in the seventh inning with right hamstring tightness. The good news is that the injury doesn’t appear to be anything serious, and he might not miss any time.
“Hopefully with the day off [on Monday] he’ll be available on Tuesday,” manager John Farrell said following the Red Sox’ 6-3 loss. “It wasn’t a pull. It was more of a cramping sensation, probably because of the humidity over the last couple of days, but that’s where he’s at.”
Carp suffered the injury when he doubled down the left field line with one out in the seventh. He seemed to grimace a bit while coasting into second base, and it was clear that something was up when he advanced to third base rather gingerly on Jarrod Saltalamacchia‘s single into right field. Farrell and trainer Rick Jameyson checked on Carp at third base, and they decided to remove him from the game, with Shane Victorino taking his place.
The injury comes at a very unfortunate time, as Carp has been red-hot of late. He entered Sunday’s game hitting .400 in June, which gave him a .320 average overall to go with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.
