The New England Patriots have released tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Hernandez’s release comes just hours after he was arrested by North Attleboro police in connection with the murder of associate Odin Lloyd. The transaction was confirmed by the team in a press release on Wednesday morning.

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss,” the statement read. “Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process.  At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He spent three seasons with the team, playing in 38 games, catching 175 passes for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns.
