A pitcher’s nightmare became reality on Saturday afternoon, as Rays pitcher Alex Cobb was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer in the top of the fifth inning.
Cobb immediately fell to the ground while grabbing near his ear, and he lay mostly motionless. Trainers rushed to his attention, and he was carted off the field. The ball that hit him was reported to be traveling at 102 miles per hour.
According to the team, Cobb was taken to a local hospital and stayed conscious the entire time during this ordeal. He has been diagnosed with a mild concussion, and all tests came back normal.
