With an all-night celebration occurring Monday evening into Tuesday morning in the city of Chicago, there had to be some collateral damage, right?
While it’s true that a number of Blackhawks fans needed to be dispersed by police due to unruly conduct, and others took to the Chicago streets to vandalize storefronts amid all the madness, the city’s biggest monetary hit had nothing to do with physical damage. Rather, the city likely lost millions upon millions from absent, tardy and unproductive employees in the wake of the Hawks’ Stanley Cup celebration.
“In Chicago, 25 percent of the workforce is coming in late,” said John Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, according to CBS Chicago. “We see millions of dollars in productivity losses.”
Challenger says the lack of productivity results in huge losses for individual companies. He compares it to the Super Bowl, where Challenger says $242 million is lost for every 10 minutes of unproductive time at work around the country.
