Report: MLB Still Hasn’t Decided Whether or Not to Pursue Discipline in Biogenesis Scandal

Ryan BraunThe weather is heating up, and so is the Biogenesis scandal that rocked Major League Baseball.

Prior to the start of the season, a report surfaced that linked a number of major league players to a Miami-based clinic, Biogenesis, that distributed performance-enhancing drugs. The whole story got even larger on Tuesday when ESPN.com reported that Major League Baseball is working with the clinic’s former director, Tony Bosch, in an effort to suspend about 20 players for their connection to the drug scandal. Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun reportedly are among the players who could face a suspension of up to 100 games.

We all might be jumping the gun slightly, though.

According to NBC Sports’ HardballTalk blog, Major League Baseball has not yet decided to discipline the players connected to the clinic, despite that being the common inference at this point.

HardballTalk’s Craig Calcaterra reports that Major League Baseball plans to interview all of the players implicated in the Biogenesis scandal by the end of June. At that point, MLB reportedly will decide whether to pursue discipline and how. That means that if discipline is handed down, it will likely come by the first week of July.

Obviously, there’s still a good chance that MLB will seek to discipline those players involved in the scandal. It’s just worth noting that, according to the HardballTalk report, we might not be as far along as some think when it comes to dishing out suspensions.
