The Patriots released tight end Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, but the move wasn’t exactly a gut reaction.

The Patriots decided last week that, if Hernandez was arrested in connection with the murder of Odin Lloyd, they would part ways with him, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Hernandez was arrested early Wednesday morning at his North Attleboro home and is expected to be arraigned at Attleboro District Court on Wednesday afternoon. Soon after the arrest, the Patriots said Hernandez was being released.

Since he’s only completed three seasons in the NFL, Hernandez must pass through waivers before he is officially a free agent, meaning any team can still put a claim on the Pro Bowl tight end.
