Like many stories involving Shawne Merriman, this is an odd one.

The former San Diego Chargers pass rusher was hospitalized on Sunday night after overdosing on a combination of alcohol and drugs, according to Andrew Blankstein of The Los Angeles Times. Merriman was taken from The Colony nightclub to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center around 9:30 p.m.

Authorities described the hospitalization as a “medical emergency.” TMZ has also reported that the retired defensive end was hospitalized for a “possible overdose.”

Here’s where it turns strange, though.

Merriman was spotted by TMZ leaving Greystone Manor at 12:26 a.m. PST on Monday morning completely sober. TMZ had a typically inane conversation with Merriman, asking whether he used deodorant or antiperspirant and if first-round busts should give money back to the teams that drafted them. Merriman seemed happy to talk to the gossip site.

Check out Merriman, appearing totally fine, answering TMZ’s trivial questions in the video below.
