In somewhat of a surprise move, the Red Sox placed reliever Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list Friday with what manager John Farrell called a “fairly significant” shoulder injury.
The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham called it “likely” that Bailey will undergo surgery on his labrum, which would sideline him for the remainder of the season. Farrell called the prospect of surgery a “definite option.”
The Red Sox have already lost relievers Joel Hanrahan and Andrew Miller to season-ending injuries.
This marks the fifth DL stint in the last five years for Bailey, who missed time in early May with a biceps strain. He has posted a 3.77 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 30 relief appearances this season.
To fill his spot on the roster, Boston has recalled right-hander Jose De La Torre from Pawtucket. De La Torre has appeared in four games for the big-league club, allowing six runs on seven hits and seven walks over seven innings. He will be available Friday night when the Red Sox open their second-half slate against the Yankees at Fenway Park.
