Andrew Miller, who has really evolved into a reliable arm this season, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left foot sprain. Alfredo Aceves has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Miller’s spot on the active roster.

Miller faced one batter in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game against the Angels before exiting with an injury. He gave up a single to J.B. Shuck with a runner on second, and he tumbled to the ground while running toward home to back up a potential play at the plate. Miller immediately grabbed his left foot in pain, and he was helped off the field before heading to a nearby hospital for X-Rays.

The exact severity of Miller’s injury is unknown at this time. The left-hander told reporters in Anaheim that X-Rays were negative, but he reportedly was wearing a walking boot in the Red Sox’ clubhouse before Sunday’s game. He is expected to fly back to Boston for further tests.

Miller is 1-2 with a 2.64 ERA in 37 appearances out of the bullpen this season. He ranks third among American League relievers in strikeouts per nine innings with 14.1.

Aceves will rejoin the Red Sox for his fifth major league stint this season. He is 4-1 with a 5.05 ERA in nine games (six starts), and he will be available for Sunday’s series finale against the Angels.
