Andrew MillerThe Red Sox’ bullpen took another hit on Monday.

Reliever Andrew Miller will require season-ending surgery to repair ligament damage in his left foot, manager John Farrell told reporters.

Miller left Saturday’s game in Anaheim after injuring his foot while covering the plate, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day. Alfredo Aceves was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in Miller’s place.

X-rays came back negative, but Miller woke up with soreness Sunday morning and flew back to Boston to undergo further testing.

The left-hander has posted a 2.64 ERA with 17 walks and 48 strikeouts in 37 appearances this season. His ERA and strikeout totals both rank second among Boston relievers behind Koji Uehara.

Miller’s injury will likely force the Red Sox to become active as the trade deadline nears, as Craig Breslow is now the only left-handed reliever on Boston’s active roster.
