Stephen Drew‘s return comes at the expense of Brock Holt.
Drew was activated off the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s game against the Yankees, and Holt was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for the Red Sox shortstop.
The Red Sox had an interesting decision to make when it came to a corresponding roster move upon Drew’s return. Both Holt and Brandon Snyder have played well in Drew’s absence, and the Sox needed to chose which infielder to keep around in a backup role. Boston ultimately opted to keep Snyder, and manager John Farrell pointed to Snyder’s right-handed bat and success against left-handed pitchers as reasons why.
Holt hit .290 (9-for-31) with eight RBIs in 10 games with the Red Sox and even had an eight-game hitting streak from July 7-14. Snyder, meanwhile, is hitting .231 (6-for-26) with one home run and six RBIs in 11 games with Boston.
Drew completed a two-game rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Friday. He had been on the DL with a hamstring injury he suffered while legging out a double against the Blue Jays on June 28.
