The Red Sox are hoping the third time’s a charm for Jackie Bradley Jr. as they try to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season Tuesday night in Seattle.
Bradley, who was recalled from Triple-A for the third time this season, will get the nod in center field in place of the injured Jacoby Ellsbury and bat ninth for the Red Sox.
The 23-year-old began the season as the team’s starting left fielder, but was optioned back after a rough beginning in which he collected just three hits in his first 31 at-bats. Things seemed to be picking up for Bradley when he was recalled back to the big leagues on May 29 and hit his first major league home run on June 4, but he was optioned back again on June 8 after Shane Victorino returned from the disabled list.
But after a strong showing in Pawtucket, Bradley will once again try to prove he’s here to stay. The outfielder is hitting .297 with seven home runs, 18 doubles and 21 RBIs in 45 games in Triple-A ball this season.
Bradley and the rest of the Red Sox lineup will try to turn things around against Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who is 7-4 with a 2.60 ERA this season. Allen Webster will start on the mound for the Red Sox, who will try to put an end to their three-game skid. Boston has lost three in a row three times this season, but each time has come back to win.
