Astros pitching prospect Jarred Cosart turned in one of the best debut performances in years Friday night, allowing just two hits over eight shutout innings in Houston’s 2-1 win over Tampa Bay.

Cosart took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for Houston, spoiling a complete-game effort by defending Cy Young winner David Price, but the way the 23-year-old’s outing ended will surely be the subject of some trash talk around the clubhouse.

Returning to the mound for the ninth inning, Cosart walked leadoff hitter Desmond Jennings on five pitches. He then got a little distracted, allowing catcher Carlos Corporan‘s throw back to the mound to smack him right in the face — with the brim of his cap saving him from a black eye.

That would end Cosart’s night, as closer Jose Veras entered the game and made things interesting, allowing two hits and a run before finally closing out win No. 1 for the young starter.
