A suspension forced Jurgen Klinsmann to watch the United States win the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup from afar, but he was always close to the action.
Klinsmann, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team, watched the Gold Cup final between the U.S. and Panama game from a luxury box at Soldier Field in Chicago. He was forbidden from sitting on the bench or having any contact with his assistant coaches, so he was essentially a fan for two hours on Sunday afternoon.
In the 84th minute, U.S. forward Eddie Johnson had a chance to put his team up 2-0 and seal the victory, but he missed the clear-cut scoring opportunity.
Klinsmann’s attention was fixed on the action, and he was ready to celebrate the certain goal … until it didn’t happen. All the German-born coach could do at that point was drop to his knees and get lost.
Luckily, FOX Sports cameras caught the actual moment, so we can laugh at Klinsmann’s disappearing act.
The U.S. went on to win the game 1-0, clinching its first Gold Cup crown since 2005. Klinsmann left the box and joined the celebrations just moments after the referee blew the final whistle. After all, he was a coach again.
