The opening guitar riffs to Metallica’s heavy rock hit “Enter Sandman” are a familiar sound to Yankees fans at Yankee Stadium old and new. With Mariano Rivera set to play in his final All-Star Game on Tuesday night, the pump-up song that Rivera enters to, will be played in the city’s other big league park.
The Yankees closer will make his All-Star Game appearance at the Mets’ home of Citi Field with “Enter Sandman” playing, as a tribute to the greatest closer of all time. Rivera has entered home games to that song since 1999.
“It will be a fitting tribute to one of the great players and people the game has seen,” Yankees president Randy Levine said, according to FOXSports.com. “Thanks to the Mets and to MLB.”
Rivera is scheduled to pitch at some point during the game, but it’s still uncertain when he’ll enter his 14th Midsummer Classic. Despite getting ready to walk away at the age of 43, Rivera is once again on his game this season, one year removed from a season-ending knee injury. Rivera enters the All-Star break with 38 saves and a 1.83 ERA.
