Matt HarveyMatt Harvey knows how good he is, and what city he lives in. That much is clear.

Harvey hasn’t been shy when talking about the level he wants to reach as a Major League Baseball pitcher, and that has included a quest to rule both on and off the field. He shared those ideas in a little more detail for the August issue of Men’s Journal.

“Baseball is my job, and I love it, but it can’t be the only thing I’ve got going on,” Harvey said of his side life in New York City, where he’s quickly figured out how to enjoy the local culture.

Harvey, who has been compared to Roger Clemens on the mound, has a couple of other role models in mind when it comes to the life he wants when he’s not pitching. Harvey mentioned Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, whom he has befriended and says he wants to emulate for his stylish clothes, but he’s also kept an eye on cross-town star Derek Jeter.

“That guy is the model,” Harvey told Men’s Journal. “I mean, first off, let’s just look at the women he’s dated. Obviously, he goes out — he’s meeting these girls somewhere — but you never hear about it. That’s where I want to be.”

Harvey is dating Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne Vyalitsyna and living in the East Village. He says he enjoys local restaurants, parties and clubs but won’t drink in the 48 hours before he’s due to start.

“But those other days? Yes, I’m gonna go out,” he said. “If I was locked up in my house all week, I don’t know what I’d be like on the baseball field.”

Harvey was also looking forward to the day when he’d sign his first big contract. He says he’s not going to buy a home until he can get “the best apartment in the city.”

“No matter what, New York is now my home,” he said. “I could buy a place now, but I’ve gotta wait for that $200 million contract.”

Harvey has just 29 major league starts under his belt, but with a Sports Illustrated cover in his pocket and the New York life beckoning, he certainly doesn’t lack for confidence when it comes to planning out the perfect career.
