Michael Phelps may not be ready to hang up the goggles just yet.
The 22-time Olympic medalist was thought by most to be finished with his swimming career after winning four golds last summer in London, but comments he made Monday hint that Phelps may have a few laps left in him.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future,” Phelps told The Associated Press. “I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”
Phelps stated several times before and after the 2012 London Olympics that his plan had always been to retire before he turned 30. He’ll be 31 when the 2016 Games open in Rio de Janeiro, but Phelps would not say with certainty that he will not attempt to compete.
“I don’t know. We’re in 2013,” Phelps said. He did add that he is not actively training, though, saying that there is “nothing in the works.”
Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, setting records for total medals, gold medals (18) and golds in a single Olympiad (eight in 2008).
