Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
The once-great Southern Cal football team — ranked No. 1 in the nation entering last season — limped to a 7-5 record in 2012. The Trojans dropped five of their final six games, including a 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl, and now they’re even being blasted by out-of-state politicians.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid fielded a question from a USC student during a speaking engagement on Monday, and the Nevada Democrat made sure to add his two cents about the Trojans’ struggles on the gridiron.
“I hope you have a better football team than last year,” Reid said. “That was a disaster. That proves you can’t buy college football players.”
USC was bad last season — just as bad, in fact, as Reid’s own University of Nevada, which finished with an identical 7-5 record and also lost five of its final six contests. Wolf Pack alum Colin Kaepernick did come within inches of a Super Bowl victory, though. That has to count for something.
