Red Sox Would Like to Keep Jacoby Ellsbury, According to John Henry

Jacoby EllsburyThe Red Sox will be faced with a tough decision this offseason — should they go after soon-to-be free agent Jacoby Ellsbury, who will likely cost a good chunk of change, or look for a new center fielder?

The Sox stated their current position on the matter on Thursday when team owner John Henry expressed a desire to keep the center fielder during an interview with WEEI’s Mut and Merloni.

The Red Sox “would very much like to retain” Ellsbury, Henry said during the interview, but added that “there’s nothing to report” on the matter.

Ellsbury is represented by Scott Boras, who is a well-known agent around baseball for getting his players to test out free agency instead of signing extensions.

The 29-year-old Ellsbury is hitting .305 with three home runs and 33 RBIs this season after only playing 74 games last season due to various injuries. He had his best overall season in 2011, when he hit .321 with 32 home runs and 105 RBIs.
