Matt Garza is a player who keeps popping up in trade speculation, and his days in Chicago could be numbered.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Cubs are making progress with at least two teams when it comes to trading Garza, and a deal over the All-Star break “appears likely.”
Olney didn’t specify which teams the Cubs are making progress with, but a number of teams figure to be interested in the veteran right-hander. Whichever team lands Garza will likely have to pay up, as Olney reported earlier in the day Saturday that other teams have indicated that the Cubs’ asking price remains “very high.”
The high price tag, as well as the amount of interest, is understandable. Garza entered his start against the Cardinals on Saturday — which Olney says could be the pitcher’s last with the Cubs — with a 5-1 record and 3.22 ERA over 10 starts. He figures to be the best pitcher available in the trade market, and a contender might view him as the missing piece.
Garza is slated to become a free agent after this season, and while the 29-year-old has discussed a contract extension with the Cubs, Chicago may instead opt to deal him to aid its rebuilding process.
