Report: Red Sox’ Interest in Matt Garza ‘a Little Deeper’ Than Originally Believed

It looked like the Matt Garza sweepstakes was nearing its conclusion and that the Cubs were on the verge of sending him to Texas. Things have changed, though, and some other teams, including the Red Sox, might find their way back into the mix.

WEEI.com reported this past week that the Red Sox were never really players for Garza because they were unwilling to part with top-tier prospects. According to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, however, the Red Sox’ interest in Garza is now “a little deeper” than originally believed.

Perhaps the Red Sox are reconsidering Garza because of concerns over Clay Buchholz‘s health. Buchholz hasn’t pitched since June 8, and he is expected to visit Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on Monday. John Farrell said that Buchholz’s visit is for “verification and clarification to get some peace of mind,” but things are certainly getting interesting as it pertains to the pitcher’s second-half availability.

Earlier this week, it looked as if Garza would soon join the Rangers, with one report even calling a trade “99 percent done.” But the Cubs have worked to draw competing offers into the Garza bidding, and now the veteran’s future hangs in the balance.

Garza, who is set to become a free agent after this season, is 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts this year.
