There are inevitably going to be a lot of rumors leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and this one is rather vague. It’s still worth passing along, though, as it gives an indication of what the Red Sox might be looking for while trying to improve their roster.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox are open to “possible trade-market upgrades” in the bullpen and at third base, depending on what’s available.
In other words, Olney is reporting what many believed to be the case. The Red Sox could certainly use help in the bullpen, and the roller-coaster seasons by Will Middlebrooks and Stephen Drew seemed to open up the possibility of Boston exploring help for the left side of the infield.
Perhaps specific names that fit the “possible trade-market upgrades” mold will start to surface in the coming weeks. For now, we’re left to speculate.
