The Red Sox could use a little depth on the corners of their infield, and Phillies infielder Michael Young would seem to make sense for them — as well as other teams across baseball. So naturally, the Sox reportedly have interest in the veteran.
However, it appears that the Red Sox’ interest in Young is nothing more than just that at this point in the process. With three weeks remaining before the trade deadline, The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reports the Sox still have interest in Young, but the two teams haven’t taken any talks to the next level yet.
This isn’t the first time Young’s name has been connected to the Sox. The New York Post reported in late June that Boston wanted “badly” to acquire Young, but a WEEI.com report indicated that the two teams hadn’t spoken about a potential deal for Young.
The 36-year-old is having a decent year for a Phillies team that is struggling. Young is hitting .288 with a .755 OPS to go along with six home runs and 24 RBIs in his first season with Philadelphia. The seven-time All-Star is making $16 million, but he’ll be a free agent after the season.
