Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is expected to be disciplined by Major League Baseball at some point for his role in the Biogenesis mess, but he may also be facing discipline from his own team.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that the Yankees intend on disciplining Rodriguez, not because of his alleged ties to Biogenesis, but because the infielder got a second opinion on his quad injury without telling the club he was getting a second look. It’s unclear at this point what the nature of the discipline might be, but the AP reports it’s most likely that Rodriguez will be fined.
Rodriguez was set to return to the New York lineup earlier this week, but a quad injury suffered toward the end of his rehab from a hip injury delayed that. The Yankees then said that Rodriguez has suffered a quad strain and would likely need a disabled list stint. That was refuted by Rodriguez to the point that he went and got a second opinion on the injury. Making matters worse was the fact that the doctor that gave Rodriguez the second opinion then went on the radio in New York to say that he didn’t see the quad strain.
Rodriguez released a statement Thursday saying he wanted to return to the lineup Friday. Also according to the AP report, Rodriguez and the Yankees spoke via conference call Thursday and said that Rodriguez would start a rehab assignment on Aug. 1.
