After the way he handled the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks as mayor of New York City, there are few people more respected in the Big Apple than Rudy Giuliani. Conversely, there are few people who draw more ire from New Yorkers — in sports or otherwise — than Alex Rodriguez.

So how are citizens supposed to feel when Giuliani praises A-Rod?

Rodriguez currently finds himself at the center of the Biogenesis steroids scandal. He’s scheduled to meet with Major League Baseball on Friday and could be facing a lengthy suspension from the game, if not banishment, for his alleged post-2003 PED use. Despite all that, Giuliani is thoroughly standing behind Rodriguez.

TMZ recently caught up with Giuliani, throwing out vaguely harassing, rapid-fire questions as only the gossip outlet can. The man behind the camera asked Giuliani what he thought about the Yankees’ chances in 2013, moving on to note that Giuliani has always been on record that New York fans shouldn’t boo Rodriguez. The former mayor’s reply was firmly in Rodriguez’s corner.

“I was one of the first to say that Yankee fans should not boo A-Rod,” Giuliani said. “He’s on our team. You gotta root for him. I think he’s one of the greatest players ever.

“I happen to know him personally. He’s a really good man.”
