Tim Tebow Participating in Ball-Carrier Drills Because of Ability to Scramble at Quarterback, Josh McDaniels Says

Tim Tebow, Tom BradyFOXBORO, Mass. — While watching the Patriots’ first three training camp practices, it’s easy to notice that Tim Tebow is doing a couple of extra drills that Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett are not participating in.

One of those drill has Tebow running down the field with a football while a defensive player trails him trying to force a fumble. Another drill has Tebow catching the ball, then trying to juke a defender. The Patriots’ offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, says Tebow is participating in the fumbling drill because he’s a scrambling quarterback.

“Anybody that is a potential runner that can actually do something with the ball in his hands, something good, besides Tom — the drill would last forever, he would admit that, too — we always put Matt Cassell, [Doug] Flutie, I think we did the same types of things with them,” McDaniels said. “And again, we know that Tim has a skill set that some of these other guys don’t possess in his ability to run with it or scramble with it when he has the ball in his hands.”

So, just because Tebow is running drills designed for non-quarterbacks, that doesn’t mean he’ll be playing tight end, running back or wide receiver.
