The New York Yankees pulled off one of this year’s classiest moves when they hosted nearly 4,000 residents of Newtown, Conn., for their game against the Orioles on Sunday.
The team invited the residents for “Newtown Day at Yankee Stadium,” giving them free tickets and vouchers for food and drinks, hoping the move would help the community heal from last year’s shooting. The Yankees honored the victims of the shooting by showing their names and photos on a giant video board in center field in a pregame ceremony.
A joint color guard was formed by the Newtown Police Department and the Sandy Hook Fire Department, and the national anthem was sung by the Newtown Youth Voices.
