Over the weekend, a group of 1,600 redheads gathered in Portland, Ore., in an attempt to set a Guinness world record, according to The Oregonian. Known as The Portland Redhead Event, the Saturday happening aimed to break the previous record of 890 redheads in one place — the only identification needed was a childhood photo to verify authentic reheadedness.

It’s a safe bet that there were many umbrellas and much sunblock was used at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

There won’t be an official word on the record for several months, but organizers had a headcount of 1,300-1,600 redheads at the event. In an appropriate gesture, the event also raised money for the Skin Cancer Foundation.
